Bavaria Yachts 42

German marque Bavaria Yachts is making inroads into the Australian market, with a range of production yachts spanning 31-51ft in the aft cockpit design, complemented by a centre-cockpit range from 38-51ft

The latest fast-cruising model to arrive in Australia, via distributor Ralph Hogg of North South Yachting, is the aft cockpit Bavaria 42 available in three and four cabin versions.

The 42's design is conventional, with port and starboard aft cabins, each with hanging locker and cupboard, a forward starboard cabin with twin bunks, and a forepeak cabin for the owner or skipper in the bow.

There are two heads and a nav station off the starboard side of the companionway. A large U-shaped lounge is forward of this at the widest part of the boat opposite the galley.

The centrally-located saloon lounge provides seating for a full house around the dinette, which has a concealed storage chamber. Sideboards provide stowage space and lockers.

The interior is airy with a total of 15 windows and hatches. Above deck, the cockpit can seat at least four people, featuring teak on seat thwards and cockpit floor.

The 42 is designed for short-handed sailing and features four self-tailing, two-speed Harken winches. There are two additional winches for the halyards, while the rest of the deck gear is from Rutgerson.

The traveller on the cabin top is out of the way of the cockpit, and the stylish pedestal for the mechanical wheel steering, with room for gauges and pedestal compass and Tridata instrument panel, is moulded as part of the deck.

Other features include a electric windlass from the helm, roller-furling headsail and main with single-reefing line.

The 9/10th fractional rig is designed to be easily managed by a cruising couple. Included is twin sweptback spreaders and an adjustable backstay.

Volvo saildrives power all Bavaria yachts.

Designed by J&J - the designer behind both the Grand Soliel and Dufour ranges -- Bavaria yachts are built to Germsnsicher Lloyd's GL-100 A5 certification.

The hull below the waterline is solid fibreglass, and Kevlar is used in the bow sections, while the sides and top deck are all Divinycell foam-cored. The range can be built to survey, and as a result, is proving popular on the Australian charterboat sector, with a fleet of Bavarias already operating in the Whitsundays.
