Italian boat builder Azimut is working behind the scenes on its revolutionary, closely guarded, new 55S. Like no Azimut before it, the new S Class sport yacht features Volvo Penta’s triple IPS pod-drive installation for greater performance than its shaft boats to date.
Smaller in dimension and lower in weight when compared to traditional shaft-drive configurations, the pod drives put the engines further aft of the vessel, thereby freeing up large amounts of space to enhance onboard liveability, Azimut explains.
But we already knew all that. Where this boat gets interesting is with the aft garage arrangement, the foredeck with walk-through sunpad, and the construction.
The stern garage door is a single integral structure combining the swim platform. When opened, the garage door exposes a two-metre wide teak-laid swim platform, which may be submerged and then tucked beneath the stern.
With an additional movement, the garage door may be further inclined to launch and recover the jet tender. The garage structure is entirely moulded out of carbon fibre and offers optimal storage for a Williams 285 Jet Tender.
The development of a specialised tender hauling and launching system offers easy-of-use and safety to the end user, says Azimut.
In order to reduce weight and improve performance, innovative hi-tech construction materials such as carbon fibre have been employed, strengthening floor panels and other structural elements.
The overall result is that structural bulkheads of the master cabin, engine room, garage and the whole overall superstructure boast greater solidity and strength, while reducing weight and ensuring high performance from the IPS pod drievs.
The new 55S is slated for a September launch this year. The boat introduces a whole new hull profile. Accommodation spans three cabins, plus crew quarters in the bow. More when it comes to hand.
