From July 1 this year, everyone in a boat less than 4.8 metres long operating in the waters of NSW must wear a personal floatation device at all times. Victoria has aleady implemented the safety requirement.
As many older PFDs are both bulky and uncomfortable, Mercury has released an all-new automatically inflating PFD to make life easier and far more comfortable for boaters.
The new Mercury Auto-inflating PFD1 has a water absorbent switch which, when it comes into contact with water, automatically inflates the vest. For normal conditions, the vest sits flat against the torso and doesn't interfere with normal activities such as fishing or simply exploring new waterways.
For those out on the water all day, it will be virtually unnoticable.
Mercury's accessories director, Paul McLean, says the automatic inflation vest is the way to go.
"Comfort is very important because of the new safety regulations which compel people to wear their PFD more and more," McLean says.
"If you, your family and friends have to wear a PFD you want it to be comfortable and you also want it to provide the greatest level of safety -- after all, that is what it is all about."
The Mercury auto-inflating PFD1 fully complies with Australian Standard AS 1512 for personal flotation devices and is approved for use in all Australian states and in New Zealand.
