An image of a green sea turtle swimming through a school of glassfish captured off the West Australian coastline has won an international award for marine photography.
The image, captured by Exmouth-based photographer Aimee Jan, was named the winner of the annual Oceanographic Ocean Photographer of the Year awards for 2021.
The image was captured on the Ningaloo Reef, a heritage-listed reef off the northwest coast of WA.
The prizemoney for winning the award is worth the equivalent of $4700. Princess Yachts is one of the sponsors of the competition.
Jan told the Ocean Photography Awards website that the image was captured while snorkelling around the back of the reef. A colleague called her attention to the turtle sitting under a ledge about 10 metres below the surface where the award-winning image was captured.
“When I dived down to look, the fish separated around the turtle perfectly and this is what I saw,” she said.
The image of the turtle was placed ahead of other images including gannets diving for fish in the waters off Great Britain, and a Hawksbill turtle hatchling taking its first swim as it left the shore of an island in Papua New Guinea.
