Acclaimed Australian boat builder McConaghy Boats launched the second biggest private trimaran ever from its Zhuhai yard in China for a Hong Kong client earlier this month.
?
Designed by John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs, Adastra is a 140-footer (42.5m) that was four years in the making. She has been cleverly conceived to meet the needs of a very experienced ocean voyaging couple and their family.
The giant trimaran with 53 foot (16m beam) is said to be incredible fuel efficient. But unlike stripped-out trimarans like Earthrace and Cable and Wireless, which were built purely for record-breaking purposes, Adastra is a five-star luxury long-range liveaboard.
Extensive tank testing resulted in optimal outrigger height for an easy motion at sea, while the unique outrigger shape is said to provide exceptional stability in waves.
Top speed is 22.5 knots, cruising range at 17 knots if 4000 nautical miles, where fuel consumption is 120 litres per hour. At 13 knots, the 64.8 tonne boat uses just 90 litres per hour. The Alfa Laval fuel-polishing system cleans the 32,000 litre supply.
The main engine is a single 1150hp Caterpillar C18 engine. There are two 110hp Yanmar outrigger engines that double as generators, plus a 26kW Northern Lights generator. A SiMON2 integrated ships monitoring system keeps check of fuel, security, pumps, electricals, lights, and so on.
The low-drag, lightweight composite hull, built from fibreglass/Kevlar foam sandwich with carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb cored superstructure, has a draft of just 1.12m. This will enable it to access many waterways otherwise off limits to conventional superyachts.
There are three anchors driven by carbon fibre drum winches run by hydraulics. The primary anchor is a 130kg Bruce that deploys out the starboard wing. The bow anchor is 80kg and deploys from a carbon fibre arm in the bow. And there’s a third stern anchor.
Thanks to the broad beam, a massive saloon with lounge, dining area and nav. station features on the main deck. Views extend out the panoramic windows, while a forward-facing door leads out to a foredeck with sunpad.
The aft deck boasts a sofa, bar, dining area and storage for two tenders to 4.9 metres in length. The tender garage door doubles as a dive platform.
?In respect of accommodation, flare in the central hull creates extra space in the full-width master cabin. With two guests cabins and crew quarters, Adastra can sleep nine guests and up to six crew.
The interior appears contemporary thanks to light oak joinery courtesy of Jepsen Design, Hong Kong, and interpreted beautifully by McConaghy Boats, which still retains a yard in Mona Vale, Sydney.
