The Australian Boating College (ABC) Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast divisions, held a safety meeting and training day in July for 10 instructors at The Spit on Queensland's Gold Coast. The aim, says Russell Shipman of ABC, was to raise awareness amongst instructors of new areas of risk on the water, as highlighted in recent Coroners reports following a spate of fatalities.
Australian Boating College strives to assist customers by keeping its instructors up to date with new rules, new technologies, and new boating safety initiatives. The focus is on enjoying on-water activities while observing a few basic safety precautions.
ABC says that in an emergency, skippers are often stressed and confused. The ability to receive, understand and apply safety information can be greatly reduced. By presenting the information before it is required and reinforcing the information through scenarios and practice, should lead to a marked improvement in efficiency and performance during an emergency.
Here are five top tips to help you:
1. Wear a lifejacket
2. Check the engine and fuel
3. Tell others where you are going
4. Carry some means of calling for help
5. Keep an eye on weather and tides
Australian Boating College has 22 branches throughout Australia where boat and PWC licences can be obtained on the same day.
"This is the ideal time of year to train for your boat licence in Queensland," says Russell. "There are calm conditions, beautiful weather and you can beat the summer rush." Courses are government approved and offered in comfortable, fully-equipped premises.
ABC also offers nationally-accredited towing courses and online radio courses, where applicants can study online for MROCP MF/HF or MROVCP VHF radio licences at their own pace, and then book in to sit the examination.
