The Swedish America’s Cup challenger Artemis is in mourning today following the death of crew member Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson.
Simpson was one of the 11-member crew of the AC72 catamaran which capsized on San Francisco Bay.
The crew was thrown into the water during the capsize but Simpson was trapped under the upturned vessel for an estimated 10 minutes before being hauled aboard a chase boat where rescuers performed CPR.
The double olympic gold medalist was rushed ashore to waiting paramedics but was pronounced dead at the St Francis Yacht Club.
Australians Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen were also on the boat at the time of the capsize but are reported to be safe.
"The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened," said CEO Paul Cayard. "Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family."
