App helps keep boaters safe

Get this! New NSW Marine Rescue app. Log on from your smartphone for fast access to boating safety resources

A new smartphone app to be released by Marine Rescue NSW on Saturday (March 7) will help boaters stay even safer on the State’s waterways.

The free MarineRescue app, developed specifically for NSW waters and conditions, is suitable for both Apple and Android mobile devices.

MRNSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos said the MarineRescue app was a great advance for boating safety, providing boaters with a range of valuable safety tools and information that could help save lives in an emergency.

"The MarineRescue app connects boaters quickly and simply with our network of more than 3000 trained search and rescue experts," he said.

"MRNSW operates the State’s only log on service, which gives boaters the peace of mind of knowing someone responsible knows they’re out on the water, where they’re headed and when they’re planning to return, so a search can be swiftly mounted if they’re overdue.

"This is the only app that enables boaters to log on directly with Marine Rescue NSW. And if they’re not safely back when expected, the MarineRescue App is the only one that will alert us that they’re late and possibly in trouble.

"It also offers boaters the choice of an extra live safety tracking option, updating their position in our system every 30 minutes.

"Every minute counts in an emergency on the water so knowing where to start searching for someone who is missing can mean the difference between life and death."

Tannos stressed that the app did not replace EPIRBs or marine radios and boaters should still ensure they carried all required equipment to immediately summon help in an emergency.

The MarineRescue app provides boaters with a range of other useful resources, including:
>> Latitude and longitude coordinates
>>  Tide, wind and weather conditions
>> A safety checklist for before you head out
>> Emergency call procedures and
>> Information on MRNSW

The MarineRescue app was designed by Australian mobile development firm Alive and can be downloaded free from Saturday March 7 from the App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android devices.
