An Outback Adventure

TrailerBoat editor Daniel Nash joined Subaru on a trip to the Coorong National Park for a look at just how adaptable its 2007 range of Outbacks is

COORONG – SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
The Coorong National Park covers an area of about 50,000 hectares and was declared in 1966 to conserve the distinctive landscape, coastal dune system, lagoons, wetlands, coastal vegetation and unique wildlife that are hallmarks of the region. As well as playing home to some of Australia's most sought-after fishing species, the Coorong is a habitat for many species of migrating birds, as well as a refuge for birds in times of drought. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in the region.

The Coorong is also a site of archaeological importance. Middens and burial sites throughout the park provide evidence of aboriginal occupation over many thousands of years.

LIMESTONE LIQUID
The Coorong is found within one of South Australia's most famous wine regions: the Limestone Coast. With 13,000 hectares of land under vine, it can be divided into six wine regions: Padthaway, Wrattonbully, Mount Benson, Robe, Mount Gambier, and the world famous Coonawarra.

Local wine expert David Dean suggests the following wines to drink with your catch of the day: The Katnook Estate 2003 Coonawarra Chardonnay; Yalumba Late Harvest Viognier 2005; and the 2006 Heathfield Ridge Sauvignon Blanc.

A SUPER SUBY
Driving the new range of 2007 Subaru Outback's was the perfect way to explore the Coorong National Park, South Australia, and surrounding regions. Whether it was beach driving up the 42 Mile Crossing, heading outback to Salt Creek or touring the open road, the Outback handled superbly.

Subaru markets the Outback as a true recreational vehicle and the 2007 Outback has received somewhat of a facelift both inside and out to enhance this reputation. Each All-Wheel Drive Outback now comes with a reversible, washable cargo floor, telescopic steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels, and six-stack in-dash CD player.

Like its predecessors, the 2007 Outback range is powered by Subaru's specially developed Boxer engine. Subaru claims the Boxer engine provides better balance and stability, which is no doubt enhanced by Subaru's trademark All-Wheel Drive. The 3lt Outback's torque is improved at low revolutions for refined pulling power, making it a real option for those looking to tow a small sportsboat, tinnie or personal watercraft.
