America's Cup to go ahead
Meeting confirms all teams enthusiasticFollowing the recent death of Artemis crew member Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, the organisers of the 34th America’s Cup regatta have confirmed that everything is still on track for the San Francisco event starting early July.
A meeting of all teams was held following the Artemis incident and organisers said the decision to go ahead was unanimously accepted.
While final arrangements are being made for racing which starts in seven weeks’ time, Race Director and Australian sailing legend Iain Murray has put together a panel of experts to review the training and racing procedures for the Cup.
In a press release this week, the organisers said in part: “The Review Committee will make its recommendations following the loss of Artemis Racing crew member Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson (GBR) in a training accident on San Francisco Bay on Thursday of last week.
“Members of the Committee have strong backgrounds in the sport at its highest levels as well as involvement in other reviews where an incident at sea has claimed the life of a competitor.”
Mr Murray will chair the committee.
Meanwhile, investigations as to what caused the Artemis accident are still under way.
The first event in which the AC72s will compete is the Louis Vuitton Cup beginning on July 4.
