Oracle Team USA became only the second America’s Cup team to launch and sail one of the new AC72 cats when it took “17” out on San Francisco Bay last Friday. But it didn’t go to plan.
“We got the boat in the water and got sailing. We slowly brought it up and everything was looking good,” said the Australian skipper James Spithill (33).
But the session was stopped short due to what was described as a daggerboard failure. The boat and crew returned safely to base.
“We’re going to have to pull the boat out and go straight into the shed and see what happened…” Spithill said.
“I think with a brand new class you always have challenges and we’ve seen that already…
“This is part of the learning process but how we react as a team and how we solve the problems, that’s what is very important,” said Spithill, the youngest ever winning skipper of the America’s Cup.
