All your Evinrude questions answered

Can you still buy an Evinrude outboard engine? What happens with my warranty? What about servicing?

To say that Evinrude’s decision to quit making any more E-TEC and E-TEC G2 outboard engines came as a bit of a surprise is something of an understatement.

However, the commercial realities are what they are, and we all have to move on. That said, the hole that Evinrude will leave in Australia’s on-water culture will likely be as large as the loss of car-maker Holden.

With new emissions standards coming in on July 1 that will effectively ban the sale older two-stroke outboard engines, the loss of Evinrude and its clean-burn two-stroke technology leaves Australia with just four-stroke engines, limiting the appeal and applications that gave modern two-stroke tech an advantage on the water.

So, what does the change mean for anyone who owns an Evinrude E-TEC or ETEC G2 outboard engine, or plans to buy one?

I still want to buy an Evinrude outboard engine

You still can. Telwater, Evinrude’s exclusive distributor in Australia, says that along with dealer inventory it still has enough stock in place to “ensure a smooth transition”.

I’ve bought an Evinrude outboard engine. Will I still get it?

“Most customers who have ordered an engine will receive their units in a timely manner,” a Telwater spokesman told boatsales.com.au. “If a customer would like more information they should contact their dealer.”

What happens to my warranty?

Telwater says it will continue to honour Evinrude’s manufacturer limited warranty. Telwater currently offers a five-year factory-backed warranty on all engines ranging from 25hp to 300hp.

What about servicing and replacement parts?

Telwater says Evinrude will continue to supply customers with service parts as needed, as well as honouring all extended service contracts.

Can I continue to go to my Evinrude dealer for maintenance and repairs?

Yes. Telwater says most Evinrude dealers will continue to provide maintenance and repair services.

Will replacement parts be hard to find?

No. Telwater says it is committed to providing parts that customers will need for maintenance and repair.

When will Mercury outboard engines become a factory option?

Mercury Marine has announced that its engines will become the preferred factory fit option from June.

Doesn't the same company that owns Evinrude also own Sea-Doo?

Yes, a Canadian-based but global powered leisure product maker called BRP. However, Sea-Doo products use very different engines to Evinrude's outboard products and Telwater has confirmed they are unaffected by this decision.
