A Haddon man has been jailed for three months, fined $5000, and banned from fishing for seven years after an incident with Fisheries Officers on Port Phillip Bay, near Clifton Springs, last year.
The 52-year-old allegedly became hostile and aggressive, refused to co-operate and provided a false name and details when intercepted by Fisheries Officers.
Due to this behaviour, Officers were not able to complete their inspection of the man's vessel or establish if he had a fishing licence. Water Police also attended and were unable to safely board the vessel.
The man was found guilty of 26 charges under the Fisheries Act. In addition to the sentence and the fine, he was also ordered to pay $6722 in costs.
Over 48,000 inspections were carried out by the Victorian Fisheries Authority last financial year to promote sustainable, safe and responsible fishing.
VFA says it would like to thank the vast majority of fishers that provide assistance to Fisheries Officers during the inspection process and exercise excellent stewardship of Victoria's fisheries resources.
Report illegal fishing to the 13 FISH (13 3474) hotline.
