Former Aussie soldier James Prascevic is preparing to take on the treacherous Bass Strait solo in a small 4.55m aluminum boat between Victoria and Tasmania without stopping or assistance in order to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute.
With the endorsement of an ex-RAF navigator, current world record holding ocean rower, Marine Safety groups and many others, he’s preparing to attempt the crossing later this year.
After serving nine and a half years in the Australian Army, The Royal Australian Infantry Corps, James was medically discharged last September due to post traumatic stress disorder, major depression, anxiety and alcohol dependence. This included severe arthritis in his left ankle, after breaking his leg in a training parachuting accident which has led to permanent ankle fusing.
So why this exercise to raise awareness? "Since my discharge I love the freedom of being on the open water," said James. "When I am fishing and in my boat the only thing that I worry about is the end of the rod tip. I feel I can do anything and that I have nothing wrong with me mentally or physically. I am 110 per cent!"
The Black Dog Institute is a world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder.
The Institute aims to improve the lives of those affected, and in turn the lives of their families and friends.
Founded in 2002, the Institute combines expertise in clinical management with cutting edge research.
The attempt is scheduled for December 31 and James is seeking donations toward this worthy cause, no matter how large or small.
