A drone dispatched search-and-rescue solution

Aussie-designed Little Ripper Life Saver Rescue Pod short-listed for DAME innovation awards

Australian marine-safety company SOS Marine has received well-deserved recognition for its Little Ripper Life Saver Rescue Pod. The holistic marine rescue system includes drones that dispatch auto-inflation platforms, which can support three or four people, and shark shield protection in the event of a threat.

The idea is to reduce the cost and time of helicopter rescue by providing local solutions that hinge around the dispatch of re-usable Rescue Pods by drones. The system is designed to assist distressed swimmers, surfers and sailors in remote locations and in less time than it would take a chopper or boat to arrive from afar.

The Little Ripper Life Saver has now been short-listed in the lifesaving and safety equipment category of this year`s 26th Design Award METS (DAME), which is held in conjunction with the METSTRADE show from November 15-17 in Amsterdam.

METSTRADE show is the largest marine trade show in the world, but no stranger to Sydney-based SOS Marine. This is its fifth safety product in six years that has been accepted for final judging.

SOS Marine believes its innovative Little Ripper system could change the face of search and rescue (SAR) worldwide by providing drone-based observation and delivery of rescue packages and pods which is calles ULBs.

ULB stands for “you little beauty,” something you might shout when one of these life-saving pod is dispatched overhead. Upon immersion, the pods automatically inflate to provide enough flotation to support three to four people caught in a rip or from a sinking yacht. Multiple drones could dispatch more pods for a larger group in distress.

There is an automatic SOLAS light for night rescue, SOLAS-grade high visibility retro-reflective tape, large sea anchor and optional Shark Shield. The lightweight Rescue Pods are reusable. A GPS position of the drop is provided to rescuers. Then other rescue organisations might step in to effect the pickup.

SOS Marine develops safety and rescue equipment for 13 National Defence Forces worldwide. More at www.sosmarine.com.
