Sea-Doo has super-sized the jet ski to create the Sea-Doo Switch, a pontoon boat that drives like a personal watercraft but can change its layout to suit whatever you’re planning to do that day.
The tri-hulled Switch pontoon uses an impeller-based Rotax jet ski engine to push itself along the water, with the skipper using a handlebar rather than a wheel to steer it.
By reversing the direction of the impeller’s jet, Sea-Doo can boast that the Sea-Doo Switch will be the only pontoon boat on the market to feature a braking system.
To add versatility, the Sea-Doo Switch’s platform is modular, meaning owners can strip it bare for a morning fishing session, and later in the day fill it full of lounges to party on when the sun goes down.
According to BRP, Sea-Doo’s owner, the entire deck of the Switch is made of configurable “tiles” that can lock in anywhere on the deck.
“Only the helm is stationary, and the rest of the layout can be changed in seconds to accommodate any adventure with easy-on, easy-off LinQ quick-attach tiles,” Sea-Doo said.
“There are almost 100 options available, allowing people to add or remove seating, change table locations, and much more.”
The three pontoons under the Sea-Doo Switch will provide good stability at rest. On the move, the tri-hull would provide plenty of agility “allowing people to lean into turns and carve through the water”, Sea-Doo said.
“It also adds that rush of excitement and a dynamic behaviour people don’t get from a traditional pontoon,” Sea-Doo said.
The US market version of the Sea-Doo Switch will include two upgrade packages – Cruise, featuring lounge chairs and a swim platform and Sport that’s geared towards tow and wake sports – and feature performance ranging from 100hp to 230hp.
The trailerable Sea-Doo Switch will also be available in lengths ranging from 4.0 to 6.4 metres, with passenger capacities ranging from five to nine people.
Importantly, the entire Sea-Doo Switch range will be built with a beam of just 2.4 metres, making them easy to hook up and tow behind a car in Australia.
Sea-Doo Australia was asked for comment, including the Sea-Doo Switch’s availability here.
