Honda will add drive-by-wire technology to its BF115, BF135 and BF150 2.4-litre four-cylinder four-stroke outboard engine range in a trickle-down of the technology first rolled out to its V6s.
The new engine range, which has been completely redeveloped and redesigned, was revealed overnight at the Salone Nautico in Genoa.
The new iST “intelligent Shift Technology” fly-by-wire controls, which will shift gears and operate the throttle electronically, will sell alongside versions of the engines that will still use mechanical controls for those owners who prefer the physical connection.
The new technology will also allow multiple engines to be controlled from a single throttle lever at the helm, greatly reducing complexity for multiple engine installs.
As well as the new digital controls, the new Honda BF115, BF135 and BF150 will use the VTEC variable valve and BLAST variable timing technology that gives better engine response at low revs, and PGM-FI fuel injection to control performance and fuel economy.
In terms of looks, the new mid-performance engine range borrows heavily from its larger V6-engined cousins to feel more like a family than a separate line.
According to Honda, the reimagined “dynamic motion” exterior design forms a dramatic forward-leaning wedge, a shape it says evokes the brand’s “iconic heritage”.
Honda has also tinkered under the cowling of all three engines to make the ownership experience much simpler, with the range “built with new components to simplify maintenance and reduce running costs”.
“As Honda continues to strengthen and enhance the outboard marine line-up, we remain committed to utilising our unique technologies to address environmental issues and give customers the best possible experience on the water,” Honda said.
“A commitment that is confirmed by the BF115, BF135 and BF150, or in other words, the greatest range of Honda marine engines since the world-renowned V6.”
Pricing is expected to be announced closer to the new engine range's launch in January next year. It is believed Honda will do a staged roll-out of the new engines as they become available for the Australian market.
