Queensland boat-builder Haines Signature is set to release a new, fishing/crossover version of its 640 series open boat. The new model will give customers a choice of three different 640 open-console sportsfishing boats.
The Haines Signature 640SFX crossover will become the fourth model offered with the 640 series hull, once you include the 640F cuddy cabin that launched in 2020.
The Haines Signature 640SFX, teased in social media posts, is based on the 640SF centre console, but with a revised, family-friendly front deck and interior layout.

We would expect the new layout to be available with the 640SF side console as well, but this is yet to be confirmed.
The Haines Signature 640SF side and centre console models we tested last year both have an open deck layout with moulded bow and stern casting decks, and with centre and side console helm configurations respectively.
The new 640SFX model is essentially the same as the 640SF centre console, but this new version has a V-shaped seating/lounging area up at the bow instead of the elevated casting deck and full-width transverse live well that is standard on both the 640SF fishing centre console and side console.
The layout in the new 640SFX is arguably more versatile as the front V-shaped seating area can also convert into an elevated fishing deck with the addition of an infill board that slots neatly in-between the two side bench seats.
Cleverly, the fibreglass infill board can be configured as a cocktail/drinks table with a pedestal base that slots into a socket on the floor forward of a new sub-floor storage bin.
Though not shown in the photos, we expect the new front seating area can be converted into a large sun pad by adding a cushion on top of the infill board.
There's also the ability to convert the V-shaped seating area into a pair of front-facing chaise lounges with the addition of two removable padded back-rests.
Each backrest slots down into a pair of rod holders located on the trailing/aft edge of the moulded seating area base.
Using rod holders as mounts for the backrests is clever; when you want to go fishing you can leave the backrests at home and use the rod holders as vertical rod storage racks.
With the SFX seating/deck layout, anglers don't get the huge front live well that comes with the 640SF side and centre console models but there is still a good-sized live bait tank at the rear of the boat, beneath the shorter stern casting deck.
Instead of a live well, the SFX V-seating layout comes with large dry storage bins.
I expect there will also be space for a battery or two to run a bow-mounted electric trolling motor.
Other features of the new layout include a pair of cup holders on the table/infill board, space for stereo speakers, and three durable-looking vinyl upholstered padded seat cushions.
The padded coaming bolsters that flank the cockpit in the 640SF models has also been extended to encircle the bow seating area to provide decent backrest support.
Similar to the three other 640 series models, the 640SFX should use Haines Signature's patented variable deadrise (VDH), concave-shaped deep vee hull.
This VDH shape was introduced in the 1990s but has seen continual upgrades and refinements to make it one of the best trailer boat hulls in the business.
Beneath the 640 series Haines Signatures, the VDH hull is exceptionally soft riding, yet also stable and well balanced.
We tested the two 640SF open fishing models last year and really could not fault the performance of this time-proven hull.
The two boats handled beautifully, rode smoothly through the chop, and could run to a top speed of 40 knots with a 200hp outboard engine on the transom.
I'd be expecting equally proficient handling and performance from the new Haines Signature 640SFX, making it suitable for social tow sports as well as offshore fishing.
The Haines Signature 640SFX is yet to make an appearance on the Signature boats website, but there are teaser videos up on social media.
