US saltwater fishing specialist Boston Whaler has expanded its centre console bay boat range with the launch of an all-new model, the Boston Whaler 280 Dauntless.
The new model, launched in the US this week and built on a keel-up redesign, takes a big step forward for the brand, featuring among other things a new generation of digital switching technology that allows the skipper to easily change the boat’s power needs.
The 8.5-metre Boston Whaler 280 Dauntless also features better onboard storage, with a large garage hidden away beneath the spacious forward lounge that can provide even easier access to dive tanks, buckets and fishing rods.
Another big change for this mode is a more versatile helm seat. At the push of a button, the forward-facing dual-width helm seat transforms into a leaning post. Another press transforms the seats into an aft-facing vantage point to watch the fishing action in the cockpit.
Speaking of fishing, the Boston Whaler 280 Dauntless boasts plenty of rod storage space, an 85-litre transom live well fitted as standard and a forward fish box with pump-out for storing the day’s catch.
The boat’s softer side also gains a makeover, with the Boston Whaler 280 Dauntless featuring large swim platforms to either side of the outboard engines, with a starboard walkthrough transom, and an optional fold-down patio to create more space.
To help those on board wind down, the newest addition to the Dauntless range includes an enhanced audio system and lighting that changes colour.
The helm console includes wireless smartphone charging and space for either a single 16-inch multifunction screen, or side-by-side 12-inch screens – a dual Simrad NSX multifunction display package is available.
Overhead, the fibreglass hardtop includes forward and aft floodlights, a watersports tow point, and four rod holders to complement the side-deck level ones.
A head is hidden away below the console.
Performance ranges from a single 350hp Mercury V6 Verado with hydraulic power steering and Mercury’s VesselView engine monitoring system, up to dual 300hp Mercury V8 Verado outboard engines with digital throttle controls and hydraulic steering.
Joystick piloting is available on 250hp and 300hp dual-engine systems.
The new model sits at the top of the Dauntless range above the Boston Whaler 220 and 250 Dauntless.
