2021 Yamaha GP1800R, VX series unveiled

Yamaha’s performance flagship GP1800R SVHO and the middle-of-the-range VX series have had a major overhaul for 2021

The race-winning and award-winning Yamaha WaveRunner GP1800R – and the mid-range VX series which shares its deck and hull – have come in for their biggest change in up to five years.

While this generation hull arrived in 2015 in the VX series – and in 2017 in the revived GP1800 high-performance model – the top deck is completely new for 2021.

Both the 2021 GP1800R and VX range benefit from a deeper top deck (for a lower centre of gravity), wider footwells and a narrower seat for improved rider comfort, a new 4.3-inch digital dash display (which first appeared on the 2019 FX flagship series), and significantly increased storage in the bow, glovebox and under the seat.

An integrated speaker system will be available on certain models for the first time. However, there will be some brief delays to the audio option for Australia due to production interruptions caused by the coronavirus crisis.

The handlebars are adjustable on the GP1800 and VX series for the first time. Yamaha has also developed an accessory mounting system for both GP1800R and VX models.

Improved acceleration

The GP1800R promises better acceleration due to a new intake grate design and an upgraded jet pump, which enables less turbulent water to flow through the jet pump. The result is better acceleration and less cavitation in choppy water.

The 70-litre fuel tank has moved rearwards by 80mm (and lowered by 15mm) for improved balance and handling.

Powering the 2021 Yamaha GP1800R SVHO is the same 1.8-litre supercharged four-cylinder as before, while the GP1800R HO retains its naturally aspirated 1.8-litre four-cylinder.

The 2021 Yamaha VX series is available with a choice of the naturally aspirated 1.8-litre four-cylinder or a 1049cc three-cylinder TR-1, depending on the model.

Yamaha does not list the power outputs for the engines in these watercraft.

Industry-first trim system

Technology upgrades for the GP1800R include an industry-first “auto trim” function with “cornering control” and “launch control” modes.

When engaged, “cornering control” automatically lowers the trim when decelerating for tighter cornering. Launch control also automatically shifts the trim down to prevent bow rise when accelerating quickly.

Such changes are likely to enhance what is already one of the most nimble watercraft on the market, and which is a favourite among closed course racers.

While performance riders will benefit from the many changes to the new deck design on the GP1800R, most of the redesign was made for VX series models that appeal to recreational riders.

The middle-of-the-range VX series is the biggest selling model for Yamaha in the US, whereas Australia sells a higher proportion of the flagship FX series.

The 2021 model year changes are designed to breathe new life into the VX in Australia, and attempt to mirror the appeal of this watercraft in the US.

More storage, bigger sounds

On the practical front, the bow storage compartment opening is larger to help with access, and also has an upgraded, durable design with a high-strength plastic hinge and damper.

Storage under the seat is larger than before and comes with a water-resistant box for clothing and valuables that need to stay dry (as per the FX series).

The new watertight glovebox is the largest Yamaha has offered in the category and comes with LED lighting, a dedicated area for smartphones, and USB and 12V power outlets.

For the first time, Yamaha is also offering factory-installed, custom-integrated marine audio speakers on VX Limited HO and VX Limited models.

The package includes twin 4.5-inch waterproof marine speakers, an integrated two-channel (50 watts per channel) amplifier, an easy access control pad, and an integrated low-voltage regulator to protect the battery.

However, this option will likely not be available in Australia until the first half of 2021 due to production interruptions in the US.

Australian arrival, pricing

Pricing for the 2021 GP1800R and VX series will be announced closer to their Australian showroom arrivals.

The 2021 Yamaha WaveRunner GP1800R is due in November, while the VX series is due in late January or early February 2021.
