2021 Regal 36 Grand Coupe, Regal 36 XO launched

Regal’s express cruiser range expands with two new 36-foot models aimed at enjoying everything from day trips to long weekends

US tow sports and pleasure boat brand Regal Boats has expanded its express cruiser range with an all-new 11.0-metre model with the choice of twin Yamaha outboard or Volvo Penta inboard engine performance.

Of note for potential Australian buyers, both the outboard-engined Regal 36 XO and sterndrive 36 Grande Coupe have been optimised to perform in messy offshore and lake chop, with an all-new variable vee running surface that’s also honed for high-speed cruising.

The new 36-foot boat follows on in the tradition of the Regal 3560 and the regal 35 Sport Coupe, one of the boat maker’s best-selling models that featured a sliding sunroof that could close in the accommodations.

Setting the benchmark

The 35 Sport Coupe was something of a key model for Regal, introducing buyers to the concept of split-level express cruisers featuring a large, user-friendly cockpit that could tackle everything from dayboat convenience to long-weekend sojourns.

The new Regal 36 XO and Regal 36 Grande Coupe taps into that legacy. Both were designed using customer and dealer feedback on the recently launched 38 Grand Coupe.

You can see this feedback in the new Regal 36 XO and Regal 36 Grande Coupe, with both featuring a queen-size bed in the forward accommodations, and a separate head and shower.

Both boats can create either an open-air or enclosed experience at the push of a button via a large sunroof over the saloon.

Owners can have the boats equipped with either a saloon that’s open to the cockpit or a fully enclosed saloon via a glass bulkhead.

A set of optional canvas/clears can enclose the cockpit to create more all-weather space.

Outboard engines

Both boats have a large swim platform, with the outboard-engined version featuring a cut-in to mount either twin 350hp Yamaha V8s or twin 425hp Yamaha 425 V8 XTO Offshore powerplants. The space under the cockpit floor where the inboard engine would have been mounted is converted into a large lazarette.

The hull is good for a top speed of more than 34 knots, with a cruising speed of around 26 knots, Regal says.

In North America, the Regal 36 Grande Coupe features the choice of numerous Volvo Penta units ranging from twin 600hp right up to twin 860hp, all with joystick controls.

Because they’re made with the North American market in mind, a Seakeeper stabilisation system is available for both models.

Single-level living

Both boats feature a walk-through transom door into a large, open cockpit with a grill on the forward starboard corner. A transom lounge can slide back on rails onto the swim deck to create more cockpit room when needed.

The cockpit’s bulwarks feature a series of steps that make stepping onto a dock much easier no matter what the water level.

The saloon is on the same level, and features a drop-down window facing out into the cockpit, a galley with electric cooktop and options for refrigeration, and a dinette.

Forward of that, the helm can feature either dual 16-inch combination sounder and chartplotter touchscreens, or an optional 22-inch version that fills almost the entire console. Autopilot is another option, as is a bow thruster.

The helm has a large sliding window beside it, helping the skipper communicate with the crew while berthing, or adding airflow through the saloon while anchored up.

Bow access

A panel on the starboard side of the windscreen slides across, and a swing door opens to provide access to the bow.

Up here, a twin sun lounge includes adjustable backrests, stainless steel cupholders and USB charging ports on each side. A Bahama sunshade for this space is available.

The accommodation below includes a forward master suite with the double bed and under-bed storage.

Aft is a lounge area that converts into another set of berths, which includes space for an optional microwave oven.

A shared bathroom includes a ceramic bowl sink and a teak-lined separate shower space.

Australian pricing via Regal’s official distributor, Sydney’s Premier Marine, is expected to range from about $675,000 for the Volvo Penta V8 350 option, up to around $760,000 for the range-topping outboard model featuring the twin Yamaha 425s.

Australian arrival

The first Australian deliveries are expected in March next year.

Standard equipment is expected to run to a 240-volt electrical system with genset and twin 30 amp shore power; drop-down TV in the saloon; bow thruster; electric grill; windlass with chain; Garmin 8622 marine chartplotter; and a VHF radio.

Other equipment is expected to include a windscreen wiper; underwater lights; Fusion audio system with amplifiers and sub-woofer; battery charger; gas vapour detected; cockpit fridge, cabin and cockpit reverse-cycle air-conditioning; and a water heater.
