2021 Malibu M220 luxury wake boat launched

Malibu’s high-end luxury wake boat shrinks in size without shrinking the comforts

Malibu has revealed the all-new Malibu M220, a smaller version of its M240 luxury wake boat for buyers seeking a boat measuring less than 7.0 metres without compromising on performance.

Malibu said the M220 was born “out of customer demand”. While the new model won’t be built here, Malibu Australia has confirmed the new luxury wake boat will be available to buy here.

“The response to the M240 was overwhelming,” Malibu global chief executive Jack Springer said.

“We kept getting requests for a more compact version of the ultra-premium M240, so we worked incredibly hard to make a boat just under 23 feet that would live up to the new benchmark the M-Series set.

“The result is nothing less than a ground-breaking towboat that sets a new standard in its size class.”

The smaller member of the M-Series family keeps the deeper hull that provides more freeboard, which in turn means more ballast and onboard storage.

“The groundbreaking M-Line hull also allows for the M220 to cut through rough water like a bigger boat while still handling like a more compact boat,” Malibu said.

The boat will be available with Malibu’s new-for-2020 Stern Turn system that uses a hydraulically deployed stern thruster to help manoeuvre the boat at low speeds – important when swinging around to someone in the water, or docking.

Monsoon, LT4 power

Powering the Malibu M220 is a standard 430hp Monsoon M6Di, with the option of stepping down to the 360hp Monsoon M5Di or up to the 607hp supercharged LT4 V8.

As always, buyers can customise their Malibu boats with a raft of optional equipment. Key upgrades include premium luxury dash housing, vented windshield, and a more premium audio system.

An upgraded Malibu Command Centre dash features dual touchscreen controls controlling everything from front- and rear-mounted cameras, the audio system, lighting, wake and more.

Made for wakes

The Malibu M220’s ballast system features both plug-and-play and inbuilt tanks, with faster fill and drain pumps prepping the boat in a shorter time.

The hull also is equipped with Malibu’s Surf Gate surf system, the Power Wedge III system to control the shape and size of the wake, and the Surf Band system that allows the rider to adjust the wake settings from behind the boat.

Families with younger children aren’t overlooked with this boat; Malibu says a flip-up bow seatback converts the bow lounge into a playpen with forward seating for three adults.

Malibu is offering either the G5 tower as a standard arch for the Malibu M220, or the automatic raising and lowering Gx tower that can also incorporate a spray mister for warmer days out on the water.
