Organisers and the high-octane sponsor of the 2016 Red Bull Dinghy Derby in Renmark, South Australia, says it's the biggest in the event's 36-year history.
With more than 90 boats registered to compete, and an all new 30hp rookie's class, the Derby will be one to remember. The racing action start at 10am, Sunday February 7, in Renmark.
If you're unfamiliar with the Dinghy Derby, it's pretty simple.
A revved-up fleet of more than 90 heavily modified 'average' fishing boats — read tinnies — pushes speeds upwards of 80km/h (45 knots) through impossibly tight creeks and shallow river systems, barely wide enough for the boat itself, along 100km of the mighty Murray River.
The brave race-boat skippers and their one-man crews known as 'swingers' pass perilously close to rocks, logs and riverbanks, making it not only one of the most unique motorsports in the world but also the most on-edge and exciting.
To win the race, the drivers have to take the tightest lines around snags, places like Carnage Corner, and run what they call "the suicide line." There are sometimes barrel rolls and collisions with trees in this extreme motorsport.
With 2015 champions, the Fitzner brothers, looking to go back-to-back, and multiple runner-up Matt Thur hot on their heels, plus the return of a few Derby legends in Scott Jenke and John Chigross, the 2016 Derby racing will be hotly contested and right on the limits.
