With summer around the corner and the flathead on the chew — pretty much anywhere from Wave Break to the 'Pin and all about the Broadwater — anglers are gearing up for the annual Flathead Classic from September 28 to October 1.
Hosted by the Gold Coast Sportfishing Club, this year's 23rd Flathead Classic has a seriously cool prize — a 460 Renegade with a 75hp Evinrude engine worth $30,000. Every angler has the chance to win the rig which also includes custom flathead wrap by Bonza Graphics, painted hull, alloy trailer, electric motor bracket, front and rear casting platform, plus much more.
"We enjoy supporting local community groups and working with the Gold Coast Sports Fishing Club is one way we can highlight how fantastic the Gold Coast is for fishing, and encourage people to get out and enjoy our local waterways," said Paul Banning, Dealer Principal of Broadwater Boating Centre and Surf
Coast Marine, which are both part of the award winning Hinterland
Group.
From humble beginnings in 1994, the popular social Flathead Classic now attracts hundreds of sportfishers from around the country to the serpentine and sandy flattie habitat around the Gold Coast and Broadwater.
Historically, the results from this 100 per cent catch and release tournament have provided valuable flathead catch and growth-rate data used for long-term management of the species in Queensland.
The Flathead Classic attracted a record 551 anglers in 2015, but the hot tournament is much more than a comp these days — it is a feature event with an excellent random prize pool, giveaways, entertainment and a strong family-fishing theme.
The event is now sold out with a record number of entries. Each competitor's entry fee includes meals, commemorative event fishing shirt, team bag containing lots of lures and other goodies courtesy of our sponsors, Tournament Handbook for every competitor, and the opportunity to share in $250,000-plus worth of prizes including the hot 460 Renegade flattie rig.
According to the pre-fishing reports, the flatties are on this chew. The forecast is for perfect weather, too. More at 2016 Gold Coast Flathead Classic.
