2015 Riverland Dinghy Derby: Video

Must-see extreme tinny racing along a wild 100km stretch of the Murray River

Founded in 1981 over a bet between mates, to see who was the fastest in their tiller-steered knockabout tinnies, the Riverland Dinghy Derby has grown to become one of the premier annual events in South Australia with Red Bull sponsorship and some pretty serious cash prizes in 2015.

Set over 100 kilometres of serpentine tree-lined Murray River, the crazy race course twists and turns around sweeping bends and seemingly impenetrable creeks to challenge the mettle of the best tinnie drivers in the country.

Attracting more than 70 two-man teams from all around Australia in their modified tinnies, the Riverland Dinghy Derby features 15hp, 25hp and 30hp standard outboard race classes, a 30hp Sports category and a 30hp ‘Super Standard’ 300CC Modified race class.

Of course, the tinnies have been beefed up to take the stresses of racing and have internal custom internal fit outs, with things like grab rails to save the two-up crew’s bark from bingles and flying trees.

The combination of powerful tiller-steer outboard engines, a wild outboard river track, the tough little tinnies and plenty of derring-do is a recipe for some incredible racing. The after-dark Dash for Cash and Family Class racing all add to the thrilling weekend of tinnie racing on the Riverina.

Big things are planned for this very-Aussie tinnie race by the organisers, the Riverland Dinghy Club. Meanwhile, enjoy the video production and wrap of the 2015 Red Bull Riverland Dinghy Derby from Renmark, South Australia.
