Fishing in the 2014 Gold Coast Flathead Classic started in earnest on Thursday October 2, with a huge fleet of estuary-fishing craft gadding about the local waterways in the search of 'lizards'.
Now in its 21st year, the Gold Coast Flathead Classic attracted more than 500 anglers last year and created record attendance for what is an excellent family and fun fishing event.
The Flathead Classic attracts pro anglers, top rods, recreational fishers and even first timers who are all in the running for the top prizes.
Of course, the Gold Coast estuaries are renowned for their big flathead and event organiser, the Gold Coast Sportfishing Club, knows there is no better time to go hunting for them than this time of year.
The flathead aka 'lizards' are the target, but not just the small ones. The big 'crocodiles or 'crocs' as they are affectionately known are the fish that anglers have in their sights. Pre-fish social media reports show they are snapping and the big high-pressure system and fine weather will keep them active.
The eco friendly catch-and-release Flathead Classic is held over three days. No live wells are needed. What anglers do need is a digital camera to capture their catches against the tournament ruler provided at the briefing (last night).
Furthermore, this is a lure and fly only comp, so no natural or live bait is allowed (full copy of the rules at www.goldcoastsportfishingclub.com.au/gold-coast-flathead-classic/2014-gold-coast-flathead-classic/).
The Flathead Classic is fished in teams of two or three anglers. There is a Champion Team award and individual trophy categories, along with some other species' trophies.
However all of the big prizes are won by random draw! You don’t have to be the best angler to take home the major prize of Bluefin boat, Mercury outboard and Dunbier trailer!
Tournament entry includes a team Tournament Bag packed full of goodies, Tournament Shirt for each angler plus four dinners, as well as entry into the lucky random draw.
The Flathead Classic is famous for bumper raffles, casting comps and other promotional activities and entertainment. The event brings the community together, anglers inject a lot of money into the Gold Coast and hire houseboats and book local accommodation, and have winged it from far and wide to fish this year.
The longest flathead last year measured 94cm and the event's catches are traditionally used by fisheries managers to help safeguard the flathead stock for the future.
The precinct for the 2014 Gold Coast Flathead Classic is Broadwater Parklands (GR Thompson Park) right next door to Nev Howard’s Bait and Tackle Shop. Parking will be off the North st/Marine Pde Intersection, Southport.
