Now in its eight year, the 2013 Sydney Harbour Regatta will see more than 200 keelboats race in 24 divisions on nine courses over most of Sydney Harbour as well offshore this weekend.
You can’t miss the show of sailing strength -- the spectacular kaleidoscope of spinnakers, the tick-tacking yachts and calls of "starboard" -- on Sydney’s stellar yachting waterways.
Hapless pleasure boaters should stick to near-shore navigating, keeping to the right of the channel when heading upstream, and passing approaching boats port to port as you must.
Drop anchor and hang out at the top anchorages and please don’t make waves in the no-wash zones outside host Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) at The Spit.
Competitors, meanwhile, are being asked to abide by the commercial craft right of way and not cut in front of ferries. There's been some equally spectacular ferry fails in the the past and countless near misses.
Aside from the racing. the annual sailing soiree includes beach breakfasts from 8.00am and entertainment from 4.30pm all weekend. A nest of temporary moorings has been laid between the MHYC and Chinamen’s Beach for the competitors, who number in the thousands and come from sailing clubs all over Sydney.
Partly cloudy or sunny days are forecast with light 10-15 knot sea breezes for the 2013 Sydney Harbour Regatta. So besides the racing prowess, the results will reflect local knowledge and reading the holes and tides as well. See www.shr.mhyc.com.au for details. Photo: Andrea Francolini/Audi.
