The famous NT Barramundi Classic is Australia’s premier barramundi-fishing tournament held on the unspoilt Daly River, located in the Northern Territory, 300 kilometres south of Darwin. To be staged in early May, the event has already attracted plenty of interest.
"We have 49 teams comprising 147 anglers from all over Australia, as well as a team from PNG competing this year," said event organiser Leigh Halprin. "This is similar to previous years," he adds.
Among the entrants are current champions and winning teams from the past 10 years of the tournament. But fishing is set to be a little different this year.
"If there is no more rain between now and The Classic, the river could be very low and we could see some strategic fishing techniques being used," Mr Halprin said.
"Fishing at the Daly at the moment has seen some really big fish being caught and there was a report that one charter operator got his clients onto 13 fish over a metre in a four-day period in the past two weeks," he adds.
Held during the peak fishing times, The Classic ensures all caught fish are measured, tagged and released by each team of three anglers. Scores are accumulated daily on a length basis.
Teams are permitted to fish a 52km stretch of the river from 7.00am till 5.00pm for five consecutive days. The outright winner, the team with the most accumulated points, receives the prestigious “Barra on a Stick”.
Twenty-seven years ago, the unique NT Barramundi Classic was founded by the Darwin Game Fishing Club, which still stages the event today.
From those humble beginnings, “The Classic” has grown in stature every year to what we now see -- a highly co-ordinated, state-of-the-art fishing tournament, attracting the best anglers on the latest go-fast barra' boats.
In fact, "The Classic” is the premier barra'-fishing tournament worldwide and now has five-star accreditation. Competing teams descend on Darwin from all over Australia, as well as overseas, to fish the week-long annual competition from the new breed of high-speed barra boats.
